How to Choose a Route Type
Route names describe how data travels from the local network to the exit region. They are not simple tier labels. IEPL, relay, and direct routes each suit different network conditions; consider the destination, content, local carrier, and time of use together.

IEPL focuses on cross-border path organization and the quality of the entry point. Compared with ordinary public-internet direct connections, traffic travels over a specially arranged cross-border link to the exit region, reducing detours and unpredictable public-network hops. It is better suited to peak-hour use, continuous video playback, remote meetings, and longer data transfers.
IEPL resources generally require greater investment to build and maintain, so route counts are not simply increased for appearance. To assess whether an IEPL route fits your current network, check whether the connection remains continuous, page resources load completely, and meeting audio stays clear rather than relying on a single momentary speed test.

Relay Routes
Relay routes send the connection to a relatively stable intermediate location first, then onward to the destination region. Their main value is avoiding public-internet paths that perform poorly between the local network and a distant exit. For faraway destinations, a relay often maintains continuous access more easily than a direct cross-region connection.
Relay paths add an extra routing step, so their resource cost and maintenance complexity generally fall between IEPL and direct routes. They are a practical general-purpose option: when the destination is clear but direct loading is inconsistent, try a relay in the same region before switching to a more distant exit.

Direct Routes
Direct routes travel from the local network straight to the exit region without an additional dedicated relay. The path is simpler and resource costs are generally lower. When routing between the local carrier and destination is good, direct connections can provide a clear, straightforward experience for everyday browsing, email, document sync, and light use.
Direct performance depends more heavily on the local network and public-internet routing. Results can vary by carrier, even within the same city, and by time of day. If a direct route causes incomplete loading, video buffering, or repeated reconnects, switch first to a relay or IEPL route in the same region instead of repeatedly restarting the client.

Route Cost Does Not Determine Results
IEPL routes generally require greater link investment, relays require additional entry points and routing resources, and direct routes have a simpler path structure. However, a higher-cost type is not automatically better in every location or for every destination. When the distance is short and public routing is smooth, direct may be sufficient; for cross-region access or peak-hour use, relays and IEPL are worth comparing first. Choose based on sustained performance on the device you are using.
